“We do not need magic to change the world, we all carry the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”

– J.K. Rowling

On May 10, 2019, The Women’s Leadership Conference of Southern Oregon held their 6th annual conference.

The theme this year was Leadership in Action, and POW did they deliver!

The day kicked off with Golriz Lucina, Head of Creative at SoulPancake. She had us all crying, laughing, and sharing throughout her remarkable speech. Her topic — how to harness the superpowers of joy and creativity to change the world.

Honestly, the hardest part of the Women’s Leadership Conference is picking and choosing which sessions to attend. Luckily, you can’t go wrong. This year, we were riveted by:

  • Thecia Jenkins spoke on BOLD Impact: Discovering Your Inner Leader and taught the power of Emotional Intelligence.
  • Entrepreneurs and brave souls Kristy Laschober and Lindsay McPhail who courageously shared stories of their personal journeys in The Value of Disrupting Leadership Culture.
  • Julie Gillis who had us try improv “Yes, AND” exercises to open up our communication style, collaborate, connect, and show how others felt supported, heard, and acknowledged.
  • Jori MundyBreaking Barriers: Success in the Face of Adversity, Jori helps people transform their lives and reach their goals by using her out setbacks and triumphs as examples.

The day ended with Dr. Deborah Cohan, who at 44 was diagnosed with breast cancer. A dancer all her life, she danced the day of her diagnosis and all through her treatment, including in the operating room immediately prior to her bilateral mastectomy. The video of her dance was posted on YouTube and went viral, instigating a pop-up social movement of joy and healing through dance. She healed and is a survivor teaching how to embody joy, even in our darkest moments.
